Overview

In today's complex independent school landscape, strong financial literacy is critical for all school leadership roles, not just the business office. This joint program by NBOA and the Association for Academic Leaders is designed to empower senior administrators — including heads of school, division directors, and deans — who do not have a financial background with a strong understanding of the independent school business model. The intensive two-day program will demystify school finance and equip participants with the essential knowledge and vocabulary to understand their institution's financial underpinnings. Over just two days, participants will progress from foundational concepts to strategic application. Learning formats include interactive sessions, case study analysis and moderated panel discussions with seasoned business officers and heads of school.

Participants will:

  • Learn core components of the independent school business model, including key revenue streams, expense drivers and the critical role of philanthropy.
  • Gain practical experience in calculating and understanding net tuition revenue, understand the annual budget cycle and explore how academic initiatives directly impact financial outcomes.
  • Be equipped to build stronger partnerships with their business office and to identify strategic levers to ensure financial health while advancing their school's mission.
  • Build confidence to engage meaningfully in strategic financial conversations, ask insightful questions of their business officers, and ultimately make mission-aligned decisions that ensure their school's long-term sustainability.
