Enterprise Risk Management for Independent Schools

This three-week course equips school leaders with tools to identify, assess and proactively manage risks across all facets of independent school operations. From financial sustainability and compliance challenges to cyber threats and reputational exposure, participants will learn to build a dynamic risk framework aligned with enterprise risk management concepts, institutional values and long-term goals.

This course includes asynchronous instruction available daily through videos, reading and discussion boards.  To maximize learning, participants should plan to interact with the course frequently throughout the week.

This course is offered in partnership with the Association for Academic Leaders.

Course Schedule

Week 1

Steps to Creating an Enterprise Risk Management Program

Discover how a practical ERM program can help your school anticipate challenges, strengthen decision-making, align resources with strategic priorities, and protect its mission. This week, you'll learn the foundational elements of ERM, including governance, leadership engagement, team formation, and overcoming common barriers, while building a roadmap for implementation at your school.


Week 2

Identify and Assess Risk

This week, you'll learn how to identify, categorize, and assess risks across your institution, from safety and operations to strategic priorities. Using a customizable risk registry templates and a comprehensive risk assessment tool, you'll gain practical methods to prioritize risks, allocate resources more effectively, and strengthen your school's resilience and decision-making capacity.


Week 3

Developing Risk Mitigation Strategies and Mitigating Risk

You'll learn how to develop practical mitigation strategies that reduce risk while supporting your school's mission and goals. Explore incident reporting, documentation, and continuous improvement practices, and leave with customizable mitigation planning and incident tracking tools that help transform risk awareness into meaningful action and long-term resilience.
