Mary Kay Markunas

Mary Kay Markunas

As director, member resources and programs, Mary Kay Markunas supports NBOA's full line of professional development offerings including the NBOA Annual Meeting, Business Officer Institute, webinars and online courses, as well as partnerships with other associations serving independent schools. As a content matter expert and former independent school business officer, Markunas develops, delivers, and contributes to programs and services to independent schools related to their business operations, leadership and governance, nonprofit accounting practice. She also directly assists member schools in finding answers to their questions and maintaining NBOA’s collection of tools and resources.

Prior to joining NBOA, Markunas served as the director of finance and operations at The Avery Coonley School, a PK-8 coed day school, for 12 years. While a business officer, she served on the NBOA board of directors for five years (2010-2015). Before working in independent schools, she worked in corporate finance at a global corporation and in engineering consulting. A member of NBOA’s staff since 2015, Markunas has been involved in all aspects of member support, program development and research, including leading the development of NBOA’s Business Intelligence for Independent schools (BIIS) data collection platform

She holds a B.S. from Purdue University in engineering geology and an MBA in finance from the University of Michigan. She has served as the secretary on her local high school’s music association board and volunteered with both local religious and educational organizations.
