As teaching schools produce fewer graduates and faculty compensation lags behind inflation in many areas, schools struggle to design hiring systems that will attract and retain faculty and staff who can deliver on the school’s mission. In this two week course, we will discuss strategic initiatives that can expand the school’s talent pool while complying with existing laws and create a supportive environment for both new and returning faculty and staff. Join us to discover innovative solutions for your challenges and learn more about what schools are doing to create compliant and sustainable hiring systems.
This course is offered in partnership with the Association for Academic Leaders.
In this first week, we will learn about techniques being used by schools to attract mission-appropriate candidates and to align the candidate’s expectations with the reality of working in an independent school. We will focus directly on the hiring process and how it can adapt to the unique needs of each school.
The best hire is the one you don’t need to make, but to do that, school leaders in all contexts must develop policies and practices that create an attractive and inclusive work environment for all employees in order to avoid unnecessary turnover and the loss of institutional knowledge. In the final week of this course, we will explore options for acclimating new hires to the school’s culture and developing a sense of community and belonging for both new and returning faculty and staff.
