Valerie Hughes is now in her 18th year at Hathaway Brown, where she serves as associate head for finance and administration. Val is involved in not only large-scale strategic planning initiatives, but also day-to-day initiatives to ensure consistency and prudence. Among the many projects she has shepherded at HB is the construction of the Jewett-Brown Academic Center, which includes a four-story glass atrium, the state-of-the-art Carol and John Butler Aquatic Center, and an all-new turf field — a rarity for schools HB's size. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in business sciences from Cleveland State University, and she serves as treasurer for the National Coalition of Girls' Schools. Prior to her tenure at HB, she worked for 17 years at the YWCA of Greater Cleveland, including eight years as CFO. She also spent a decade working in higher education, as the vice president for finance and administration at Ursuline College. Additionally, she has served on the board of the Midwest Business Officers Association, including a year as president.
