Overview

The NBOA Business Officer Institute is an immersive, four-day experience designed to help you lead your school’s finance and operations with confidence. Through practical guidance, proven tools and insights grounded in the independent school context, you will strengthen your knowledge across the areas you oversee, including accounting and financial reporting, business operations, human resources, risk management and legal issues, facilities, board governance and data analysis, and more.

You will leave with practical insights and resources you can use immediately, a stronger understanding of the independent school business model and a trusted network of peers and experts to call on long after the Institute ends.

Who Attends?

BOI GroupBOI is designed for independent school business leaders across career stages, offering a strong foundation for those earlier in their tenure and fresh perspectives, practical resources and valuable connections for more experienced professionals. Experienced professionals also benefit from fresh tools, timely insights and opportunities to mentor colleagues entering the field. The program is equally valuable for new heads of school, controllers, COOs, other school business and operations professionals, and those aspiring to become an independent school business officer.

The Program

Expert-led learning sessions and small, cohort-based conversations create an engaging environment where you can ask candid questions, test ideas and learn from colleagues facing similar challenges. The intimate format helps participants build lasting professional relationships, and past attendees consistently describe the connections formed at BOI as invaluable throughout their careers.

In just four days, you’ll build the working knowledge to lead confidently across a wide range of business operations, from finance to facilities to risk and beyond.

BOI SessionSessions are led by highly regarded business leaders currently working in independent schools, NBOA staff with deep expertise in school business operations and other specialists with industry-specific knowledge. Together, they bring practical experience, current perspectives and real-world examples to every session.

Your learning begins before you arrive and continues after the Institute. Self-study materials, which may include recorded lessons, written resources and other tools, will help you arrive prepared and serve as a practical reference as you tackle your independent school’s most pressing business and operations issues.

Back by popular demand! The Human Resources Institute (HRI) and BOI will again be co-located and run concurrently, creating valuable opportunities for shared learning and broader networking across both groups. Participants will gain perspectives from colleagues with complementary responsibilities and expand the professional community they can draw on after the program.

The curriculum addresses the essential knowledge and relationships business officers need to navigate their broad responsibilities and contribute strategically to school leadership.
