Mar 15, 2019, 12:37 PM

(from Institutional Investor and Pensions & Investments) Independent school endowments returned an average net 7.4 percent for fiscal year 2018, according to an annual study from Commonfund Institute conducted jointly with NBOA. While a decline from fiscal 2017's average net return of 11.8 percent, this year's returns were an improvement over fiscal 2016 and 2015, which saw average net returns of -0.8 percent and 2.3 percent, respectively.

Independent school endowments tend to favor alternative investments, allocating 33 percent to them in fiscal 2018, a small decrease from fiscal 2017's 35 percent. The largest sub-allocation was 18 percent in “marketable alternative strategies,” which include allocations to hedge funds, absolute return, market neutral, long/short, 130/30 and event-driven funds and derivatives, according to the report.
