Because interims are not seeking long‑term advancement, they are often better positioned to confront entrenched problems, make unpopular but necessary decisions, and move stalled initiatives forward. However, interims only work if boards are honest and supportive, as faculty members are looking for clear signals that trustees will stand behind difficult decisions, the analysis notes.
