Creative Approaches to Cybersecurity Trainings

(From Inside Higher Ed) In an effort to bolster institutional defenses against cyber threats, several colleges are experimenting with unconventional cybersecurity awareness training in the form of festivals, art installations and role-playing games. A recent training at Notre Dame, for example, featured a “go phish” activity that asked attendees to spot indicators of a phishing email and a “slam the spam” trivia event that quizzed participants on security trivia. Stanford University also hosted a cybersecurity festival featuring engaging activities such as lock-picking and hacking activities. Both schools say their events were successful in enhancing digital literacy in their communities and attracting students who may not otherwise be interested in the trainings.
