(From EdWeek) Parents overwhelmingly want after-school programs, but demand far exceeds supply, especially for low- and middle-income families, according to a new report from Afterschool Alliance. While families seek programs for 30 million children, only 7 million are enrolled — leaving three in four without access. Cost is the biggest barrier, cited by 56% of parents, followed by transportation and limited availability. Higher-income families spend nine times more on out-of-school activities than lower-income families. Advocates urge schools and community partners to collaborate on solutions, such as adding bus routes, to expand access and reduce inequities.
