Each year provides a unique opportunity for NBOA to recognize two colleagues who reflect the highest professional standards within the independent school business officer community. I am pleased to announce that the NBOA Awards Selection Committee has recently convened and chosen two truly exceptional leaders for recognition during the 2017 NBOA Annual Meeting.

Frank Aloise
Springside Chestnut Hill Academy CFO

The 2017 NBOA Ken White Distinguished Business Officer Award recipient is Frank Aloise, chief financial officer at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. An extraordinary business officer who recently oversaw the merger of two respected Philadelphia independent schools — a major accomplishment in an already distinguished career — Frank has served in nearly every leadership position imaginable locally as well as nationally, including recently concluding a term of service as NBOA’s ever-steady and inspiring board chair. He is known for his generosity to other schools, offering patient counsel on matters from business operations to financial aid to technology and every aspect of design and construction. “His actions speak louder than words,” wrote one of several business officers who nominated him. “He is a visionary, a colleague, an inspiration, a mentor and a friend.”

The first time I met Frank, like many others, we were colleagues and friends instantly. What I admire most about him is that he truly models lifelong learning. Despite his own vast knowledge and accomplishments, he is always reading, attending professional development programs, and sharing new information and ideas to help advance his school or the profession.

Dana Tufts
A.W.G. Dewar President

The 2017 NBOA Sarah Daignault Outstanding Support of Independent Schools Award recipient is Dana Tufts, president of A.W.G. Dewar, which has provided tuition insurance to independent schools since 1930. A true “founding father” of NBOA, Dana was there for the association since the beginning. As one of the glowing nominations for him stated, “He shared our vision and gave us both financial support through his company and personal active support on the Board. His efforts have been instrumental in the success of NBOA.” He served on the NBOA Board of Directors for two terms and has never ceased to look out for the best interests of independent schools and business officers even during the most difficult times.

There are few other business partners who have provided the level of support that Dana Tufts has provided NBOA from its inception and throughout the association’s entire existence. It’s fair to say that without Dana Tufts’ leadership, and financial support from A.W.G. Dewar, a national association for independent school business officers might not have existed today.

Join me in congratulating these two exceptional leaders. Please also join me in honoring our remarkable colleagues during the NBOA Leadership Awards Lunch on Tuesday, February 28, at the 2017 NBOA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
