Wellesley Holds Referendum on Gender Admissions Policy

Mar 14, 2023, 10:37 AM

(from the New York Times) Today, Tuesday, March 14, students at Wellesley College will vote on a nonbinding referendum regarding Wellesley’s identity as a women’s college, which has divided the campus. The referendum asks whether admission should be open to all nonbinary and transgender applicants, including trans men. Currently, the college allows admission to anyone who lives and consistently identifies as a woman. The referendum would also make the college’s communications more gender inclusive — for example, using the word “students” or “alumni” instead of “women.” Proponents of opening the policy say the college has always been a haven from gender discrimination and note that trans gender men are already on campus, having transitioned after admission. Opponents say changing the policy would change the fundamental mission of the college.
