U.S. Surgeon General Warns Against Kids' Social Media Use

May 30, 2023, 10:03 AM

(from the 74 Million) Surgeon general Vivek Murthy warned last week in a 19-page advisory that social media poses a profound risk to children, with excessive use impacting sleep, relationships and depression that can lead to thoughts of suicide. The report may also shape national policy as legislators and courts take on algorithms, privacy and age policies, and access to platforms. With average teen use at 3.5 hours a day, the report states that spending more than three hours daily doubles teen's risk of poor mental health, including depression and anxiety symptoms. Some advocates say that marginalized communities have found important connections on social platforms, which should not be discounted.
