Texas Approves School Voucher Bill

Apr 17, 2025, 12:39 PM

(From The New York Times) After more than 12 hours of debate, the Texas House gave initial approval to a bill that would create a $1 billion private school voucher program. The program would provide about $10,000 to students for private school tuition or up to $30,000 for disabled students. The majority (80%) of the program’s available funds would go to families falling under an income threshold tied to the federal poverty level. While the program would launch with a $1 billion cap in its first year, it has the potential to grow rapidly, with projections estimating it could reach $4.5 billion annually by 2030.
