Talking to Children After the Mass Shooting in Uvalde

May 26, 2022, 4:09 PM

(From NPR)  In the aftermath of a terrifying elementary school shooting by a gunman in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday who killed 19 children and two teachers, parents and teachers can struggle to explain it to their children. David Schonfeld, a pediatrician who directs the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement, told NPR that the best place to start is simply asking children how they feel and listen, as much of what they know about the event may not be accurate. Therefore, a conversation can help you determine what they don't already know or understand. From there, try not to mislead them “for their own good," said Schonfeld. For more information on talking to children about tragic events, see the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement's guidelines.
