(From The Hill) U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has increased operations near public schools, prompting student walkouts and class cancellations. In Minneapolis, following ICE's fatal shooting of a citizen, the district canceled classes for the remainder of last week and plans to offer remote learning for a month.
The increase in enforcement follows the 2024 removal of restrictions that previously barred ICE from school grounds. Attendance has declined in some areas amid heightened immigration activity. A Stanford University study found absences in five California districts rose 22% in early 2024 compared to previous years, coinciding with increased ICE presence.
