Public Colleges Ban TikTok on School WiFi and Devices

Jan 19, 2023, 11:04 AM

(From Chronicle of Higher Education) A growing number of public schools and colleges in the U.S. are moving to ban TikTok, the popular social media app that allows users to share short videos. The University of Texas at Austin, Auburn University in Alabama and the University of Oklahoma have all blocked students and faculty from accessing the app on the school’s WiFi network, among others. They are following the lead of the federal government and several states, that are banishing the social media app because authorities believe foreign governments – specifically China – could use the app to spy on Americans.

The bans could have broad impacts for higher education, particularly for admissions departments that have used the app to connect with prospective students. Also unclear is the impact private institutions and businesses.
