Proposed Changes to F-1 Visa Duration

Proposed Changes to F-1 Visa Duration

Oct 3, 2025, 11:48 AM

(from NAIS) The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed ending the "duration of status" system for F-1 international students, limiting their admission to a maximum of four years and requiring extensions of status (EOS) thereafter. NBOA, AISAP, CASE, EMA/ERB and TABS have joined NAIS in submitting comments in response to this proposal. The comment period has closed, and DHS will evaluate all comments and issue a final rule that will include an effective date. This process may take several months, and the final rule may differ from the proposed rule.
