Most Students Underestimate Total Cost of College, Study Finds

(From Inside Higher Ed) College affordability often focuses on tuition, but the full cost of attendance (COA) can catch students off guard and derail degree completion. A new Inside Higher Ed report explores how unclear COA disclosures and unexpected expenses — meal plans, tech fees, housing — impact students. Drawing on surveys, research, and interviews, it finds only 27% of undergraduates fully understand COA, and even a $100 surprise can threaten enrollment. The report urges colleges to improve COA accuracy, expand emergency aid and communicate costs more clearly.
