Employment Screening Trends for 2022

Employment Screening Trends for 2022

Feb 24, 2022, 2:01 PM

(From SHRM) As millions of workers have quit their jobs during the Great Resignation and employers compete to fill open positions, the subsequent surge in hiring has led to a boom in employment background checks. HR experts say that 2022 will likely see three screening trends:

  • The choice to eliminate marijuana from pre-employment screening, as more states and localities legalize and decriminalize marijuana.
  • The arrival of fair chance laws, also known as "ban-the-box" laws, which limits access to criminal records.
  • New limits to information typically used in preparing background-check reports; for example, California and Michigan passed legislation in 2021 that closed access to full date of birth as an identifier in employment screenings.
