EEOC Updates Workplace Harassment, Bias Guidelines

Apr 30, 2024, 3:25 PM

(From SHRM) On April 29, 2024, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) published its updated guidance on harassment in the workplace, marking the first update in 25 years. The new guidelines address gender identity, abortion and remote work. The guidance also provides specific examples of harassment, such as race-based harassment involving inappropriate comments about a person's hair. The guidelines’ definition of this harassment includes insulting remarks about others, forced outing, misgendering, and denying access to sex-segregated facilities like bathrooms and locker rooms.

There are limited exemptions afforded to those religious institutions with sincerely held beliefs that may conflict with some anti-discrimination laws. You can learn more about these exemptions here.
