Colleges Implement Job and Program Cuts Amid Financial Challenges

(From Inside Higher Ed) Several institutions, including the University of New Hampshire, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Youngstown State University, have initiated program and job cuts in response to financial strains and enrollment challenges. UNH plans to reduce expenses by $14 million, leading to the elimination of up to 75 employees. UNC Greensboro is considering the removal of 19 programs due to low enrollment. The University of Chicago has implemented a hiring freeze due to a $239 million budget deficit, and Pennsylvania State University aims to cut an estimated $94 million from the 2023–26 budget. These actions reflect the widespread challenges faced by higher education institutions in the current financial and enrollment landscape.
