College Endowments Saw Substantial Gain in 2023

(From Forbes) College endowments saw an average 7.7% gain in fiscal year 2023, a significant improvement from the prior year's -8.0% return, according to the just-released 2023 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments. The study, which is based on 688 U.S. colleges and universities, revealed total endowment assets of $839.1 billion, up over $32 billion from FY 2022. Smaller endowments outperformed larger ones, with assets under $50 million achieving a 9.8% return compared to 2.8% for those over $5 billion. Total gifts to endowments decreased by over 10% from the prior year.
