Budget Cuts as Opportunity for Clarity

Jan 27, 2026, 9:34 AM

(from Chronicle of Philanthropy) Education nonprofit leader Drew Martin has found that each time he has been forced to make budget cuts, mission clarity grew. "Financial discipline isn’t the opposite of mission — it’s what sustains it," said Martin.  He offers these four takeaways when a budget cut is necessary:

  • Communicate relentlessly and with transparency.
  • Don’t just downsize — redesign.
