(From The 74 Million) More than half of Florida families headed by same-sex or gender-nonconforming parents are considering moving out of the state, and 17% have taken steps to do so, a newly released survey finds. The report from the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute is the first look at the impact of HB 1557, officially titled the Parental Rights in Education bill, on LGBTQ+ parent families in Florida. The law prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity before the fourth grade.

In the first six months after it was passed, nearly 9 in 10 LGBTQ parents said they were concerned about the law’s effect on students' sense of worth and school climate. Among parents of LGBTQ children, 11% of parents considered moving their children to a school that is not bound by HB 1557, such as a private school.
