Afterschool Capacity Lags as Demand Stays High

According to a 2024 survey from Afterschool Alliance, 33% of programs are serving more students than they did pre-pandemic. Despite some growth, access remains limited — 53% of programs have waiting lists, a number that hasn’t changed since 2021. More than 80% of afterschool providers are concerned that students who want to enroll can’t get a spot. The data highlights an uneven recovery across programs and a persistent gap between the need for afterschool care and the availability of spaces.
