Growing To Serve You Better

New NBOA staff members are ready to serve.

Dec 3, 2019

Jeffrey Shields, FASAE, CAE
NBOA President and CEO

One of NBOA’s primary responsibilities is to understand and respond to your changing needs as a business officer, human resources professional, controller or business and finance professional at an independent school. One of the most demonstrable ways we do this is through consciously shaping our association staff. Your school’s budget reflects programmatic priorities for the students and families you serve, and the same can be said for NBOA. The NBOA Board of Directors allocates resources according to the association’s programmatic priorities, which may shift when the board identifies emerging issues.

Barry Pilson, CAE
Vice President, Membership and Marketing

On October 1, Barry Pilson, CAE, joined the NBOA staff as vice president, membership and marketing. Barry brings a depth of experience to NBOA. Most recently he spent eight years as the director, membership and marketing, for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Most of his career has been in membership, marketing and communications roles with nonprofit associations dedicated to supporting education and the arts, including American Alliance of Museums, American Geophysical Union and the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Barry’s number one job is to match the needs of member schools and their business operations staff with NBOA’s vast array of programs, resources and tools to help you and your school succeed.

Elizabeth Dabney
Director, Research and Data Analysis

As you may well know, NBOA has invested significantly in research, data analysis and tools to inform member schools’ decision-making around long-term financially sustainability. Our fully customized, one-of-a-kind data collection platform BIIS (Business Intelligence for Independent Schools) is the best example of this investment. With the addition of Elizabeth Dabney, director, research and data analysis, on November 4, we are taking this work one step further. Elizabeth will provide in-depth analysis of BIIS data by way of NBOA programming, stand-alone reports and Net Assets magazine. Most recently, Elizabeth concluded seven years of service with the Data Quality Campaign, a nonprofit education policy and advocacy organization in Washington, DC, and the nation’s leading voice on education data policy and use. There she was responsible for all aspects of the organization’s research strategies. Her other professional work experience has included research roles at data-driven consultancies Westat and Metis Associates, Inc.

Amber Stockham, SPHR
Director, Human Resources Programs

Human resources professionals as well as business officers with HR responsibilities continue to be an important and vibrant community within NBOA. In order to continue supporting this community and building out our HR resources and programs, I’m pleased to welcome Amber Stockham, SPHR, who will join the NBOA staff as director, human resources programs, on Monday, January 6, 2020. Amber will bring over 15 years of experience in the HR arena to NBOA and is concluding six years as director of human resources at Miss Hall’s School, an independent day/boarding school for girls in grades 9-12. Amber’s prior professional work has included human resources and management roles at Allergrone Construction Company and social services provider Key Program, Inc. In a volunteer capacity, she has served as finance committee chair of Captivated Health and on the board of the New England Educators Insurance Association

Would you or someone you know like to join the dynamic, smart, energetic and fun NBOA staff team? We are currently seeking a CPA with knowledge of independent schools to be the next addition to our staff in the role of director, accounting and tax programs. See the complete job posting on NBOA’s Career HQ.

New staff bring new thinking and energy to organizations, and these three exceptional professionals are no exception. On behalf of the entire NBOA staff, we look forward to serving you in the new year!
