(From The New York Times) In response to a series of high-profile crimes on campus, some parents at the University of California, Berkeley, have opted to hire private security workers from SafeBears. This group has allocated over $40,000 of donated funds toward security patrols in the vicinity of the campus, though not on the campus itself. All the people SafeBears hired received at least 32 hours of security officer training, according to the group. The university expressed concerns about the hiring, citing issues related to training and experience, and proposed that investing in campus police officers would be a more effective alternative.
