Standing for Student and School Safety

Growing list of independent school associations urge officials to take action against guns.

Mar 15, 2018

NBOA has joined NAIS and at least 13 other independent school associations in signing on to a statement in support of student and school safety in the wake of the February shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the student protests the shootings inspired. The statement was published on NAIS.org March 14, one month after those shootings and the same day thousands of students across the country staged school walkouts, demonstrations and otherwise protested for stricter gun control.

In the statement, the independent school organizations "urge[d] elected officials to take meaningful legislative and regulatory action now to support the safety and well-being of children. We also urge officials to listen to our students as they advocate for systemic change."

"The safety of our students is paramount to all of our missions and a longstanding commitment to independent school families," said Jeff Shields, NBOA's president and CEO. "I commend all of the students, from every type of school, for raising their voices and join with them to demand we do everything we can to honor our commitment to their safety."
