I admired John as a leader from the first moment I met him. When he spoke at the 2014 NBOA Annual Meeting, he owned the stage with his palpable passion for education. His loss is a loss for all of us, but I will always remember his commitment to education and his desire to have independent education thrive in the decades ahead.

Similarly, the terrorist attacks in Paris have left us all shocked and saddened. I cannot begin to make sense of any of it. Together, for me, it's far too many, gone far too soon.

If there is any lesson in this insanity, it's to make each day count. I believe John did, and I hope we all do.
