The complete course is three weeks, from October 9 - 26, 2018.
The class is conducted in a Learning Management System, which places greater responsibility on the learner than other traditional professional development programs. Classes are conducted asynchronously, so there is no single time each week when participants are required to be online. However, participants should commit to spending approximately 4 hours on the class each week.
Coursework and assignments for each week open on Monday morning, and should be completed by the following Sunday evening. Grace periods are given, but interaction is more effective when the entire class is working on the same topic. Participants will connect and collaborate with each other through several forms of interactive media, including short videos and discussion boards.
A registrant interested in obtaining a Certificate of Completion for a course must complete the program and earn the Course Completion badge. A certificate will only be issued to a registrant who has earned this badge.
Week 1: Introduction to Long-Range Financial Modeling
Learn about the benefits of financial modeling and the genesis of NBOA's tool. Participants will be introduced to and given NBOA's Long-Range Financial Model. Participants are required to load their school's data into the model and upload a copy for the facilitators to review.
Week 2: Loading and Testing the Model
Participants will learn how the parameters for the model’s assumptions were developed. Participants will then use their school's data to see how changes to those assumptions impact their school's long-term budget planning. Participants must complete this exercise before moving on to Week 3.
Week 3: Reporting from the Model
Participants will learn how to use the reporting tools in the model and receive tips on how to enhance their reporting to their head, finance committee and trustees, using the data generated. To earn the badge for the week, participants must either demonstrate the model to someone at their school and post a short synopsis of the meeting, or schedule a half hour meeting with one of the instructors to have their questions answered and get assistance with customizing their model to meet their school's needs.
