This workshop will provide an overview of U.S. federal wage and hour law, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), independent contractors, overtime and lump-sum salaries. Our focus will be on positions specific to boarding schools that are often difficult to classify and learning how to classify employees who hold multiple roles on campus. Together we will analyze real case studies, working as a group to determine personnel classifications and, just as importantly, learning how to explain those classifications to staff and the importance of proper classification to the school. We will discuss a school’s unique features that can complicate or support the implementation of wage and hour changes. Finally, we will highlight NBOA’s tools, resources and networks that support boarding school and HR professionals in this ever-changing regulatory environment.
