Even the best-laid capital project plans have likely been altered—if not gone to waste—this year, as inflation and supply chain disruptions have changed expectations in campus construction. Experts in construction and planning as well as independent school leadership will analyze trends in rising costs of construction materials as well as procurement challenges. Presenters will discuss mitigation strategies, particularly as they relate to independent school construction programs.

Eric Norman serves as the chief financial officer for Tower Hill School, an 850-student PK-12 independent school.  Norman has worked in the education industry for over 30 years, as an auditor at PWC and as a VP/CFO in both higher education and secondary schools. He led two mergers in higher education, partnered with trustees to form an outsourced investment office, and has been a frequent presenter on topics ranging from mergers and outsourcing to investments and facilities. A CPA, Norman holds an MBA from the University of Connecticut.

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co.

Mick Rayburn is a vice president with the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, a Baltimore based construction firm. His responsibilities include management of an operating group out of Whiting-Turner’s Towson, Maryland, headquarters, including oversight of all phases of construction projects within the group. In his 19 years of K-12 experience, Rayburn has built over  2 million square feet of space worth $640 million, including new construction, replacements, additions and renovations. He serves as the company’s K-12 national leader, utilizing his expertise to assist Whiting-Turner employees and clients in all things related to the K-12 industry. Rayburn holds both LEED AP BD&C and is a certified construction manager.

Casey Smith is a principal in Hord Coplan Macht’s Education Studio, with 20 years of experience in the field. His work includes a number of complex higher education and K-12 projects, including renovations, additions and new construction. Smith is intimately involved with helping his clients develop consensus by supporting their decision- making with insight and experience. He often presents to community and regulatory groups and has a proven track record for delivering design solutions that meets the client’s goals.
